A period of training in the field of research (if desirable). A course of Russian is necessary if the applicant has a bad command of Russian. Cost of training is $250 a month (that includes 10 counseling sessions with the scientific advisor). Duration of training is 1 - 10 months. Cost of 1 academic hour (45 minutes) of individual instruction in Russian is $10 (the number of necessary hours is defined after testing). Classes and training can start at any time throughout the year. |
Period of teaching and quantity of foreign students in the institute |
Since 1972 over 2000 foreign full-time students have graduated. Since 1947 several thousands have attended courses of Russian, about 500 people annually nowadays. Over the last 20 years about 200 postgraduate students have graduated. |
Accommodation |
Student dormitories within 30 minutes by city transport from the academic campus. Accommodation in 2-bed rooms costs about $2 per person a day. A hotel for foreign students right in the city center (next to the major University campus). Accommodation costs $10-40 a day depending on the type of room. Renting a single-room flat in the city is about $120-150 a month. |
Sport, rest and medical insurance |
There is a canteen, several cafes, a sports center with training equipment, a student club, a disco on the student campus. There is a library (among the oldest and biggest University libraries in Russia) in the central building. Each Faculty/College has a library of its own. Medical insurance policy costs $65 yearly. |

Practically each Faculty/College and main divisions of the University have access to Internet. The University has the Center for Distance Education - a specialized server containing a bank of materials on education and related topics linking hundreds of school teachers and University lecturers in the North-West of Russia in a teleconference and processing related materials from major educational net conferences over the world. Several specialized classes can be used for group teaching using modern Internet facilities. |
Additional information |
In May 1997 the University celebrated its bi-centenary. Starting from a founding hospital, then a female orphanage, it grew into the Imperial Women Pedagogical Institute, Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute and finally got a University status. For the whole period of its development the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia has integrated more than 30 educational and scientific institutions and accumulated in itself enormous theoretical and practical potential of education of Russia. The teaching staff numbers more then 1500 people. Five Academicians and 14 corresponding members of the Russia's Academy of Sciences and of the Russia's Academic Society, more than 30 Honored Scientists, People's and Honored Artists, 146 full and more than 600 associate professors work in the University. There are 24 Academic councils, every year more than 120 doctoral theses are defended. The University includes many faculties/ colleges which are unique for Russia, such as the Far North Peoples' Faculty, the Anthropological Faculty, the Faculty of Educational Management - the only department in Russia training professional school managers. The University's library possesses a unique collection which includes some books of the 11th century and rare publications of the 18th- 20th centuries, it numbers more than 2 million books. The colleges and departments of the University cooperate with the universities and scientific centers in Germany, France, the UK, Holland, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, China, Israel, Hungary, the USA, Hong Kong and in other countries. Every year hundreds of scientists from dozens of countries come to Herzen to take part in international conferences. On the other hand, hundreds of teachers and students of the University go abroad every year to take part in different scientific and educational programs. The University offers different programs in Russian Language, History and Culture accompanied by a number of tours of historic, cultural places in the city, city suburbs and other towns in the region. The main University campus is situated in the very center of the old St. Petersburg within 5-15 minute walk of the major historic and cultural places of the city. The buildings constructed by famous architects form a beautiful ensemble along granite Moika Embankment, which was included into the list of world heritage objects by UNESCO in 1990. The hotel for foreign students is in the same building as the Faculty of Russian as a Foreign Language, just behind the great Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky prospect. |
